We were one of the lucky few groups to receive an opportunity at these special 7yr "M Series" barrels at Copper Sky. From what we know, these are not easy to come by as they are MGP's newest 51/49 Malted Rye Mashbill. Smoke Wagon also received about 40 of these, but much younger at 4-5years (the recent 5yr M series single barrels sold out crazy fast online).
TASTING NOTES
Aroma: Wonderfully creamy and rich caramel and maple syrup sweetness mixed with some lovely herbal notes touched by a slight pepper, stone fruits, cloves, and ginger. It's a beautiful combination that reminds us of grandma's kitchen with freshly made pancakes and syrup during the holidays. The balance of sweetness, oak, and maltiness is fantastic!
Taste: A gorgeous taste that has a very nice upfront sweetness that is viscous, creamy, and full bodied. More richness comes through with buttery caramels - almost like caramels, vanilla, and a touch of rye spice was stewed in sweet butter. There's other nice hints of mint, and fruits that carry some more malty creaminess of toffee, vanilla, and additional touches of ginger and pepper. An absolute hitter of a pour.
Finish: The finish is everlasting and satisfying with some gorgeous notes of allspice, sweet caramels, and lovely vanilla. This goes on for days and is very nicely balanced with some touches of chocolate, stone fruits, malt, tobacco, and hints of spice. This is a whisk(e)y lovers pour through and through that may be one of the best Malted Ryes we've ever tasted.
